Executive Action on Immigration in Houston
Attorney in Houston, TX
On November 20, 2014, President Barack Obama spoke words that would change the course of history for millions. These words bring a hope of restoration for a system that is broken and inspire dreams in both youth and adults alike. The President's plans to change our current immigration system are what many throughout the country have been waiting to hear about for years, even decades.
At The Modi Law Firm, PLLC, we are no different. Mr. Obama's plans will pave the way for our clients to begin living the dream they've always aspired after and we look forward to helping countless individuals take steps toward this.
Attorney Susham Modi is both a law professor and a Houston attorney who has dedicated himself to serving immigrants around the world.
What the President's Executive Action Means for You
For many undocumented immigrants currently living in the United States, every day is filled with fear and questions – will this be the day I am deported? Mr. Obama's announcement made it clear that many immigrants no longer have to live like this.
Starting with better border security, the President addressed his intentions to repair the country's immigration policy. Key aspects included a focus on deportation of felons, not families, and the ability for eligible immigrants to be given deferred action. Those eligible to stay in the United States without fear of deportation must have been in the country since January 1, 2010, pass a background check, and be willing to pay taxes.
President Obama stressed the need for immigrants to play by the rules in order for these changes to work. By encouraging these individuals to 'come out of the shadows' and 'get right with the law,' he has opened what was once a closed door for undocumented people living in America.
Other notable proposals include:
- Changing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) plan to allow for the eligibility of more immigrant youth
- Increasing the amount of jobs for immigrants
- Widening the use of provisional waivers
- Stimulating citizenship education and a positive public awareness of lawful residents
In years past, programs such as DACA and many of these kinds of changes would have taken years to fully implement. Not so with the President's immigration vision. He hopes to see these transformations roll out in the coming months, some coming as soon as early 2015.
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is already making plans to prepare for the influx of applications that are sure to flood in when the changes are officially executed. USCIS hopes to complete every application by the end of 2016, giving immigrants a bright light at the end of what has been a very long, dark tunnel.
