For the second year in a row, attorney Susham M. Modi spoke at the Joseph A. Vail Asylum Law Workshop. This year’s event took place on December 17th, and was hosted by the University of Houston Law Center.
The Joseph A. Vail Asylum Law Workshop is a fantastic event that gives up-and-coming law students the chance to obtain legal knowledge that is relevant to their field of law. Our attorney, Susham M. Modi, shared his knowledge about appellate advocacy for asylum seekers with those who attended the event.
With so many immigrants and refugees coming to the United States to seek asylum, as well as the many changes the immigration system has undergone under the current administration, this topic is of particular importance today. Especially because many immigrants and refugees feel like they don’t have a real voice or many options when it comes to their asylum cases.
Attorney Modi was one of a select few number of speakers chosen to present at the event. Other panelists who presented included a former Board of Immigration Appeals Judge and former Immigration Court judges.
During his presentation, attorney Modi went over the numerous ways that attorneys can protect their clients’ rights and interests when litigating immigration cases. He also gave an overview of asylum law. In particular, attorney Modi discussed the asylum factor regarding "Particular Social Groups" and the importance of different types of evidence that can be included in an asylum case.
Attorney Modi is a former Adjunct Professor of Law and Immigration Clinical Supervising Attorney at The University of Houston Law Center. Mr. Modi frequently speaks about immigration matters and has been a guest speaker at the following locations and events:
- Rice University Graduate Program’s Immigration Law & Policy Course
- Catholic Charites
- Harris County Criminal District Court Judges
- ProBar
- Neighborhood Centers
- American Immigration Lawyers Association
- U.S Citizenship & Immigration Services’ Houston Asylum Office
Everyone here at The Modi Law Firm would like to take this opportunity to thank those who attended this event. We would also like, to extend our sincerest thank you to the University of Houston Law Center, and to those who helped organize this wonderful event.
